We would like to welcome you to our Museum, whether you are here to inspect our fantastic exhibitions or to carry out some research.
The Museum is located in the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre building at 327 West Street (SH1), along with the Ashburton District Family History Group and the Ashburton Art Gallery.
We are open on weekdays from 10am to 4pm and at weekends from 1pm to 4pm. However, we do close on statutory holidays.
Research facilities are available on weekdays from 1pm to 4pm, but if you are visiting from out of town and can’t make that time please phone or email and we will help where we can. Charges may apply for assistance with research.

OFF-SITE ACTIVITIES

The Museum can often supply a speaker for meetings of your organisation in the Ashburton area. Just contact us on 307 7890. Sometimes this can be followed with a visit to the Museum, subject to the conditions of our resource consent.

OUT OF HOURS VISITS

We are happy to arrange for groups to visit the Museum out of normal hours, and can also arrange for behind the scenes tours where appropriate, subject to the conditions of our resource consent for what are termed Public Events.
These conditions are as follows:

  • The Museum can only have six events of this type a year (the limit for large events with over 100 people attending is three for the whole building, including the Art Gallery) and we cannot have two similar events within a week of each other.
  • Events can not start or finish between 2.45pm and 5.15pm on weekdays and 9.45am and 12.15pm on Saturdays.
  • If more than 50 people are likely to attend an event special vehicle parking conditions apply.

PARKING

People visiting the Museum should not park outside or opposite the following properties:
124, 128 & 130 Wills Street (that’s the three properties adjacent to the Museum on the street to the north of the building) and 121, 123 & 127 Cameron Street (that’s the three properties adjacent to the Museum on the street to the south of the building and other residences in these two streets. These places are outlined red on the accompanying map

Parking is available in the Museum carpark at the south of the building and if that is full on both sides of West Street in front of the building, around Baring Square West, in Havelock Street and in the evenings in the District Council carparks behind the council office building. These places are outlined green on the accompanying map.

At all times visitors are requested to exercise consideration of neighbouring residential peace and quiet when leaving the facility by not slamming vehicle doors, unduly revving vehicle engines or becoming involved in loud conversations on the street.
